If you're more interested in culture and experiencing Mexico with locals you have many options.  Merida is located in the heart of the yucatan and a wonderful place to spend 3-4 days.  Many tourists use it as a starting point to visit other Mayan sites in the area such as Uxmal or the Puuc Route.  There are many other colonial towns that have managed to retain their cultural endearments.  Some of our favorites are Oaxaca, Queretaro, Guadalajara

Mexico has amazing beaches if you're the type who likes to relax with a good book and some sand on your vacation.  Places like Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta and Cancun all have large tourist infrastructure and are easily accessible from anywhere in the world.
