San Cristobal de las Casas is located in the mountains of Chiapas. It is one of the most stunning places in Mexico and a great place to stay while you take day trips to neighboring sites. There are awesome waterfalls, large mountains, deep gorges and canyons with rivers and a plethora of wildlife to see. You will also see lots of traditional people wearing very colorful clothing. Visiting small towns and markets is another attraction of Chiapas. Handicrafts are a specialty here so make sure you leave room in your suitcase. San Cristobal de las Casas has all the best Mexico has to offer including ruins, mountains, adventure and loads of culture. We have planned trips to this area as well as visited so we have insider knowledge of the best places and times to visit. What to see and do in San Cristobal de las Casas: Maya Medicine Museum – Information is available in English at this great museum. They also have real Mayan healers on site to cure what ailes you. Churches – Hike up to either of the churches on the east and west sides of town for stunning views of the city. City Center – Always a must see in any Mexican town or city. Santo Domingo Church – One of the most beautiful buildings in San Cristobal de las Casas. Built from 1547 and 1551 by Dominican Friars using a very interesting technique of lime, sand and water. Handicrafts – There is a wonderful handicrafts market on the grounds of the Santo Domingo church. Surrounding San Cristobal de las Casas: Mayan Villages – The two best towns are San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan. The easiest way to see these indigenous towns is to hire a guide who will also be helpful to explain and translate. It is best to visit during their weekly market and festivities so do some research before you go. Cañon del Sumidero – Beautiful canyon and ecological reserve. The cliffs are 900 meters above sea level and surround the Grijalva River. Great for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.
