Veracruz is a very diverse state as it has both mountains and beaches. There are many wonderful places to visit from ruins to beaches, mountains and small quant villages. In Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz, there is a wonderful archeological museum that contains artifacts from the ruins of Tajin, one of the best and most well preserved sites in Veracruz. Veracruz also specializes in vanilla; it is a very important crop here. The weather in Veracruz is tropical, but can get colder during the evening so it’s best to bring layers. The Aquarium: A modern aquarium that is worth the visit as it has large fish including sharks, barracudas and tarpons and a number of educational exhibits. You even have the chance to swim with sharks! La Parroquia Cafe: Boasts itself as the oldest café in Mexico. It is the best place to get coffee or a snack in the city and a must see. San Juan de Ulua Castle – One of the last fortresses of the Spanish empire, also used as a prison but now boasts a very interesting museum. Baluarte de Santiago – Here lay the last remains of the wall that used to surround the city of Veracruz. Surrounding Veracruz: Voladores de Papantla: The dance of the Voladores is a ceremony originating in Papantla, in the state of Veracruz. Five dancers climb a 30 meter pole and four of the five tie themselves with rope and launch off the platform, the fifth stays behind to play music. It is an amazing site. Cempoala: An important archaeological site in the state of Veracruz with several buildings, major structures and history. El Tajin – UNESCO World Heritage site and wonderfully restored ruins. Tecolutla – Great beach town for relaxing. The Emerald Coast – Veracruz is a very long state on the ocean, and is otherwise known as the emerald coast due to its emerald green waters.
