Oaxaca
This southern state is home of many indigenous cultures and produces some of the most unique handicrafts in the country. Oaxaca City along with Monte Alban are two UNESCO heritage sites.
Day 1: Arrive Oaxaca City
Welcome to Mexico! Upon arrival in Oaxaca we are met by our Adventures Mexico tour guide and then transferred to our hotel. Dinner included.
Day 2: Oaxaca
We will enjoy a visit to the Botanical Garden, which has been in development since 1998, collecting the biodiversity of the flora of the various Oaxaca environments related to its culture. The garden is the only one of its kind in the country. Then we will have a guided tour of the Regional Museum located at the Santo Domingo complex.
In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of this great city that was named a World Heritage Site in 1987, along with Monte Alban. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 3: Tlacolula, Mitla & Tule
After breakfast we board our coach for a transfer to Tlacolula, where every Sunday there is a wonderful market outdoors. Then we have a guided visit of Yagul Archeological Site as an introduction to another important site, Mitla, famous for its many geometric mosaics decorating the palace walls. On the way back to Oaxaca we will be stopping at the village of Santa Maria del Tule where we will visit one of the most famous trees in Mexico: the Tule tree is one of the world's largest and oldest trees: 53 meters round, 41 meters tall and over 2000 years old. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 4: Oaxaca
This morning we explore the markets -Mercados- , the largest collection of handicrafts from the state, including jewelry, ceramics and textiles. We also visit the 20 de Noviembre market. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the colonial city of Oaxaca on our own. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 5: Monte Alban / San Bartolo Coyotepec
This morning we board our coach for today's adventure to Monte Alban, which preserves testimonies of one thousand five hundred years of its empire which reached its peak in approximately 800 AD. Of particular note are the Grand Plaza, the Ball Game Court, the Building of the Dancers and Tomb 7. We'll continue our excursion to Cuilapan, a magnificent Dominican monastery with open-air chapel, built in 1550; an architectural and historical wonder in a setting of breathtaking mountainous beauty. After lunch we will go to the small village of San Bartolo Coyotepec and visit the "Doña Rosa" pottery workshop. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 6: Teotitlan del Valle / Arrazola
Today we'll visit the Zapotec town of Teotitlan del Valle, a weaving village near Oaxaca. Here you will experience visiting a local family and learn about the techniques of weaving. After lunch we continue on to Arrazola village, where we will learn about the art of making Alebrijes, fantastic wooden carved and painted animals. We will have a workshop at the artisan's home to see the techniques used to produce this beautiful handicraft. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 7: Day 7: Sierra Norte / Guelaguetza dinner
Our hiking adventure to the Sierra Norte begins early in the morning as we board our coach for a transfer to the mountains. We will walk around and get to know the village and then immerse to the woods of one of the less visited yet impressive part of Oaxaca. Our hiking tour will be with a local guide from the community. At night we will have our farewell dinner show with dances of the Guelaguetza, the main celebration of Oaxaca. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
Day 8: Return Home
We are transferred to the Oaxaca airport to go back home. Adios Mexico! Breakfast included.
