 ITINERARY

The Yucatan Peninsula is an area with a great mix of adventure, nature, archaeology and Spanish heritage. Opportunities abound to let you inner adventurer awake while learning about culture and meeting with local people. Come and explore some of the hidden gems of the Yucatan as you bike though remote Mayan villages, or when being hosted by a local family where you can learn to cook Mexican cuisine.

At the end of the journey, some time will also be devoted to relax on the pristine beaches of Playa del Carmen and take some optional activities to Cozumel Island or for going snorkeling in the reef.

 
 

Day 1: Arrival Cancun

Upon arrival to Cancun airport, you're met by your Adventures Mexico respresentative and transferred to your hotel in Cancun (accommodation not included)

Day 2: Merida

An early transfer to Merida. Walking tour in the afternoon visiting of "El Centro" of Merida, the Cathedral , the "Casa de Montejo" and the beautiful "Plaza Grande."

Day 3: Celestun National Park

Celestun is home to one of the biggest settlements of the Pink Flamingo on the continent. To visit them, we take a boat tour and will learn about the importance of mangroves in the region. At night we watch a traditional dance of the Yucatan, the Jarana, at the spectacle La Vaqueria.

Day 4: Uxmal

We leave very early to go to the Mayan archaeological site of Uxmal, the "three times built city." At Uxmal we will visit the 115 feet high Pyramid of the Magician and the impressive Governor's house, a wonder of the ancient world for its precision and architectural beauty. Then we will head off to the marvelous caves of Calcehtok, the biggest cave system of the Yucatan. We return to the hotel in the afternoon.

Day 5: Cenotes

We visit two marvelous Cenotes located in the small village of Cuzama. Cenotes are sinkholes where underground rivers break through the limestone crust of the earth. For Mayas, they represent the doorway to the spiritual underworld. We get on horse-drawn trucks, which take us 6 miles into the jungle to visit and swim into the beautiful, clear cenotes. We return to Merida in the afternoon.

Day 6: Mayan Biking

Today is our off the beaten track excursion to the Mayan town of Tixkocob. Today we will have a great mix of local life, culture and heritage while we bike to a a functioning Sisal Hacienda and immersing into the Mayan ruins of Ake. A delicious lunch at a local family is included today.

Day 7: Cooking lesson

Our activities today include a visit to a bustling market, learning about local fruits and vegetables and then going a local family's home to cook dishes from the Yucatan. We will have a light lunch prepared by ourselves! These are unique authentic cooking classes!

Day 8: Chichen Itza

We continue our journey with a visit to the famous site of Chichen Itza. It's a big place and we will have to walk a lot. This important center combines majesty and nature. An English speaking guide will explain us about the splendid Castle, an imposing example of the immense depth of the Mayas' knowledge of the cosmos, math and science. We will visit the biggest ball game court of the Mayan world and we'll have enough time to buy some handcrafts.

Day 9: Ek Balam

We depart Merida early in the morning to visit the the town of Ek Balam. Upon arrival we will visit the interesting ruins of Ek Balam. This magical site still has some of the original painted stucco as well as great masks and statues carved in its buildings. This site is unique in its style and layout. Ek Balam, which means "Black jaguar," was an important ceremonial center during the Postclasic period and is considered one of the most important Mayan cities.After the visit we will have some free time to wander around the town and meet with the local indigenous people. Accommodation tonight is in basic cabanas build by the community.

Day 10: Ek Balam

After breakfast we start our day with some sport activities at Xcanche cenote. To get there we first bike about 1 mile into the jungle. Once you arrive, you have the option of walking or rappelling into the cenote. Zip lining will be another adrenaline option if you want to fly over the cenote. Finally, have a dip and swim to refresh and relax after a long day.
